Description
Tsurugi Town, located in the middle reaches of the Yoshino River, a major river in Shikoku, flourished through the distribution of leaf tobacco and lumber, and is a historic town with ornate two-tiered udatsu, a firewall for merchant houses and a symbol of wealth. The main street, Gion Street, runs parallel to the Sadamitsu River, the clearest river in Japan, and is lined with old-fashioned stores still in operation. The alleyways that intersect with the street are called “shoji,” and are places of daily life that can be visited only by bicycle.
