Product Description

The Scorpion 3 by Snugpak is stalwart three-person base camp and expedition tent when a semi-permanent camp is required. The Scorpion design is a ‘Fly-first’ pitch tent that allows quick and easy set-up in difficult and remote areas using an opposing pole design, protecting you all year round from severe weather conditions. A tried and tested favourite of mountaineers, climbers and campers, the Scorpion 3 has an impressive floor space, measuring 2.25m long and 1.75m wide, as well as 1.1m of headspace, creating ample room for three people in a top-toe sleeping arrangement. There is also a spacious front porch for storing equipment. In an emergency, the Scorpion 3 can accommodate six people sitting,

The Snugpak Scorpion 3 is an easily pitched, angled profile tent with an extremely small packsize and a mere trail weight of around 2.9kg. Accompanied by DAC Aluminium Poles, it is designed not to take up valuable space and weight in your pack. When travelling on fast and light ventures, the tent design allows individuals to keep different components in each of their packs. This spreads the weight across more than one person. The Scorpion 2 is ideal for base camping and expedition use with the Softie Osprey 15 Sleeping Bag.

Rugged, dependable tent
The Scorpion 3 by Snugpak is a sturdy, two/three person severe weather tent.  It's sturdy materials and design are ideal for pitching in remote areas under all sorts of weather conditions.  The Scorpion 3 is a "fly-first" design, meaning that you setup the outer rain fly first, providing a dry interior to work from, and then install the inner tent underneath the fly.  This allows you to setup the tent during a rain storm without getting your inner tent wet. While techicaly a 3-season tent, this tent stands up to moderate snow just fine, and the mesh interior still retains quite a bit of your body heat.At around $250 or so, the Scorpion 3 lies midway between inexpensive consumer tents and the more high-end expedition tents.  I am all about practicality, if you are looking for a heavy duty, 3-season tent, there is no substitute anywhere near this price range.  If you are planning your BOB or INCH bag and are considering a roomier tent, this is the tent for you.Size and WeightSold as a three person tent, this is really more of a '2 person + gear' or '1 person, 1 dog, + gear' tent.  It will fit 3 people, but probably not comfortably, and certainly not with their gear.  The Scorpion 3 measures 2.25m long and 1.75m wide and has 1.1m of head space, meaning that an average guy can lie down and sit up comfortably.  I am 5', 9" 180lbs, and I can lie down on my back without my head or toes touching the tent. In fact, I generally camp with an ultralight cot, and the cot fits in the tent with nearly a foot of space. At about 7 and a half pounds (3400g), the weight is the only downside to this tent.  Personally, I am willing to sacrifice a pound or two in exchange for being able to pack my gear into the tent with me and having a little bit of leg room.  Bottom line for me is size, and this tent is plenty big enough for me to sleep comfortably and store my gear out of the elements.  Speaking of sleeping in a tent... unlike most tents that filter light into the tent, the Snugpak Scorpion series inner tent is made of a thick rubberized black material that blocks light so well that even in broad daylight the inside of the tent is dark enough to sleep in.SetupThe Scorpion 3 is a 'fly-first' design.  This simply means that you setup the outer rain fly first, and then attach the tent from inside.  The rain fly covers the tent completely, touching the ground on all sides and the inner tent attaches easily to the inside by hooking it to several attachment points.  In fair weather, the whole setup took me less than 5 minutes my first time, and by now I probably average under 3 minutes.  One trick to decrease the pitch time is to leave the inner tent attached, then all you have to do is unfold, run the poles and stake.note: once fully assembled, you can keep the inner tent attached and just roll both pieces up and stuff it in the sack, making the next setup quicker.Step 1:Unfold the olive green outer fly, install the three poles and stake down.  The poles are color coded. There is one silver pole and two green poles, and you have to match these up to the correct locations on the tent. Fortunately, the sleeves for each pole are color coded to match. When inserting the poles, insert the colored end of the pole through the colored portion of the sleeve.Step 2:Unfold the black inner tent and attach to the inside of the rain fly.  When inserting the inner tent, leave the screen mesh towards the opening of the rain fly. Each corner of the inner tent will have a floor attachment that attaches to the outer fly via a buckle near one of the corner poles. Don't forget to attach these corner points.Step 3:If you have or are expecting to have foul weather, setup the tie downs for the outer flaps and portals.Final ThoughtsThe Snugpak Scorpion line of tents are durable, well-made and purpose built.  The Scorpion 3 is an ideal tent for an extended solo backpacking trip in any weather.  I could not be more pleased with this tent!18 Months Later...This tent is still going strong.  It has become my go-to tent when I have the room in my pack.  In the last 18 months I've taken this on a good dozen trips, either backpacking in or boating in.  The extra room in the tent has proven to be invaluable for storing my gear in inclement weather.  The only issues I've had is with the included compression bag which ripped after the first year.  I contacted Snugpak, and they not only replaced it for free (even though I was outside of the warranty), they did not charge me shipping and tossed in a few extras as well.  I have to say, it's customer service like that that turns me into a true believer.  I also own the one person Ionosphere Snugpak Ionosphere 1 Person Tent, Olive Green tent by Snugpak which I use when I need to go light.  Both of these tents are just rock solid.

    Report
  • Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2016
When the UPS truck came, the box was pretty badly damaged and upon opening the box, the Snugpak box was also pretty badly trashed. When I checked the tent though there was no damage at all. This review is about the tent and not the box though so no problem here. The tent though is excellent quality and construction. I was using a Eureka USMC 2-man combat tent (still a major step up since my days using a shelter half) but this tent is lighter at 7 lbs.. 9.4 oz. as compared to the 10 lbs. 2 oz. for the USMC tent yet the Scorpion 3 is still larger and more roomy inside. The USMC tent has a small net shelf at the top of the dome and that works great for a light but the Scorpion 3 has much more storage area with the net pockets along the side. I also love the large vestibule with plenty of room for dry storage of packs, boots, and any other gear you want to keep dry but not necessarily inside the tent with you.
What I really love about this tent compared to the USMC tent is that the entrance is at the front of the tent as compared to the side of the tent as with the USMC tent. The big reason I wanted this tent is to double as a hunting blind. As I do my hunting at longer ranges and with a heavy rifle, lying prone is the best way to get decent accuracy. With this tent, I can roll up the vestibule door, unzip the front door (which also stores into a mesh side pocket and kept out of the way with another toggle) and still have plenty of room to lay in a prone position and be able to fire a rifle from the comfort of a dry tent/hunting blind. If I want to bring along a sleeping bag and mat, I can even camp out that night and in the morning, simply opening the front door to the tent and vestibule and now it's serving as a prone hunting blind although there is enough room for my 6' body to sit up comfortably in this tent if I should so choose. This is a major selling factor for me! My old USMC tent with its side opening didn't allow this feature.
So what do I not like about this tent? Nothing really related to the tent itself but the carrying bag could be a bit larger. I plan on leaving the tent buttoned into the fly and unless you are an origami master at folding this thing small enough, you are going to have problems fitting it back into the bag. I was considering knocking this tent down to a 4-star review for this but I happened to have a spare stuff sack around that worked great so decided to leave it at 5-stars. Besides, my decision to leave the tent buttoned to the fly, unlike the tent was originally packed may be the source of my problems so I'll take the hit on that and stick to giving this tent a 5-star rating. All-in-all, an excellent tent that will work in a variety of climates as well as one that can double as a hunting blind for me makes this an excellent buy!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing tent ... BUT be aware of challenges obtaining the corresponding footprint!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 11, 2024
We haven't actually used the tent outdoors yet but it has been pitched indoors to check that it would meet our needs. Two 6'1" teenagers will be using it with a double air mattress and single sleeping bags. These fit perfectly! The tent is also very easy to pitch once you've done it once (and I recommend trying indoors or at least during a dry still day first).

My only caveat is the corresponding footprint (which is a wise investment). At the time I bought the tent it was unavailable at all in the UK. I checked all the dealers listed on the Snugpak website and ended up having to order from 'Empire Tactical' in the US as the only listed supplier who has them in stock. Shipping costs etc. added up so that the footprint cost over £100 and took 5 weeks to arrive.

I am still pleased with the tent and Empire Tactical were great at keeping me informed of shipping which was a little delayed due to east coast snow storms.

So I strongly recommend the tent but please be aware of the footprint issue if that is important to you!

I received this tent exactly as advertised. went out with my son on a 3 day hike. This tent is awesome. For a backpacking tent it is much easier if you spilt the weight with you partner as it does weigh in at 7.5 lbs packed weight but it is well worth the carry, this thing will stand up to a tornado I swear, had some pretty good wind on our third nite and it didn't budge.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gran tienda

5.0 out of 5 stars
